How Educators Can Bridge the Gap Between Human Disease and Pharmacology (in Online Settings)

This is known as Mechanisms of Action, which explains how specific drugs interact with pathological processes, leading to evidence-based outcomes (though this can always vary from one patient to the next). 

Some examples you could dive into in your class include: 

  • Cardiovascular disease: Teaching how beta-blockers reduce blood pressure by blocking adrenaline’s effects on the heart.
  • Infectious Disease: Teaching how antibiotics selectively target bacterial cell walls without harming human cells.
  • Oncology: Teaching how chemotherapy agents can inhibit DNA replication in rapidly dividing cancer cells.
  • Autoimmune Disorders: Teaching how immunosuppressants modify the immune system’s response to reduce inflammation.

3. Encourage Critical Thinking on Treatment Approaches

Not all treatment plans for diseases are straightforward; it takes a medical practitioner years of training and experience to understand which pharmaceuticals would be the right choice for a specific patient. The same goes for pharmacists, who need to be able to explain dosages, side effects, and drug interactions to customers. Good practice for this is to encourage students to analyze pharmacological decision-making through specific discussion prompts and activities to help get the juices flowing:

  • Why might two patients with the same disease receive different treatments?
  • What factors influence drug efficacy and patient response?
  • How do side effects impact treatment choices?
  • What are the cost considerations when prescribing different drug therapies?

In an online setting, students can create their own list of questions and share them in a massive list. They can then pick and choose which questions to answer as an assignment. 

4. Implement Active Learning Strategies

Even if students are interested in their Human Disease course (and its ties to pharmacology), all students can lose motivation and interest from time to time. This is especially true in online settings, where it can be easy for students to get distracted and lose focus. This is why it’s imperative that educators focus first and foremost on ensuring their students are engaged, which helps to reinforce the vast range of topics that they are learning:

  • Flashcards: Flashcards are an old-school method that can be used to help reinforce drug classifications and mechanisms of action. Many online curriculums feature digital flashcards that students can study from or create their own. 
  • Group discussions: Assign students real-world treatment plans and have them analyze their effectiveness. This helps create accountability and also preps them for the future, where they’ll have to communicate with other medical professionals attending to the same patient. 
  • Role-playing: Assign students roles (e.g., physician, pharmacist, patient) and have them discuss various treatment options.
